You have a screenshot of a slide. You want it editable. How hard can it be?
Harder than it looks — and the reason most "converters" disappoint is that they quietly do the easy version.
Placement is not reconstruction
The easy version is placement: paste the screenshot onto a slide and call it a PowerPoint. Technically you now have a .pptx file. Practically you have a picture you still cannot edit.
The hard version is reconstruction: read the content and the layout, then rebuild the slide with native text boxes, shapes, and tables. That is what makes the file actually editable — and it is a different problem from "put the image somewhere."
OCR is the easy 30%
People assume the hard part is reading the text. It isn't. Modern OCR is good. Extracting the string "Quarterly Revenue" is straightforward.
The hard 70% is everything around it:
- Where does that text sit, and how big is it?
- What is a heading versus a body line versus a caption?
- Which words form a table, and what are the cell boundaries?
- Which elements are shapes (a card, a divider, an arrow) versus decoration?
- What should stay an image (a photo, a chart) so the layout doesn't break?
A file that only solves OCR gives you floating text boxes over a screenshot. That is worse than useless — it looks editable and isn't.
When NOT to bother
Be honest about the input:
- A blurry phone photo of a projector screen? Marginal. Capture digitally if you can.
- A dense, hand-drawn whiteboard? Kept mostly as an image — fine for archiving, not for fine editing.
- A single, clean, front-facing slide? Ideal.
If the source is low-quality, the output will be too. Reconstruction amplifies the input.
How to get better results
A few habits dramatically improve the output:
- One slide per image. Don't stitch three slides into one screenshot. Separate images convert cleaner and let you keep only what you need.
- PNG over JPG. PNG is lossless; JPG softens text edges and confuses recognition.
- Resolution wins. Capture at 2x or higher. Small text needs pixels to be read accurately.
- Contrast helps. Dark text on a light background (or vice versa) is recognized far better than low-contrast pastels.
- Straighten it. A tilted screenshot forces the engine to guess boundaries. Crop to the slide edges.
What a good result looks like
After conversion you should be able to:
- Click any text and retype it.
- Recolor a shape or move it.
- Edit a table cell.
- Drag the whole thing into your existing template.
If you can't, you got placement, not reconstruction.
The payoff
The point of converting a screenshot is not to have a .pptx. It is to have a deck you can own — revise, reuse, and drop into your workflow. That only happens with reconstruction.
